SAVE MORE - STAY FREE PACKAGES AND THE EPIC PASS

Back in April I told you about the EPIC PASS, the six-resort season pass that will allow skiers to log unlimited vertical feet this ski season. Now it’s time to see how little you can spend and make that investment work for you.

With airfare being the biggest factor, it’s good to know that bargains can still be had into Denver! Flights from across the country into Denver International Airport (DIA) appear to be some of the most reasonable fares in the market. With just about every major airline offering at least two flights daily, there is bound to be a flight from your town that will make a long weekend or mini-week worth wild. The key here is going to be BOOKING EARLY. If you want those perfect weekend getaway flights on a Thursday through Monday itinerary, BOOK IT NOW! With fewer flights and smaller planes, last minute fire sales on empty seats will be few and far between!

Planning on using those frequent flyer miles or credit card points? Think again! Several carriers are now limited the number of so called FREE SEATS available on any given flight. Additionally, they are assessing you for fuel surcharges. Many of my clients have found that it is true – THE EARLY BIRD DOES GET THE WORM or in the case of airline seats, the FREEBIES on prime holiday dates! Additionally, by booking your flights EARLY, you lock in you price! So as the fuel charges change like Miley Cyrus into Hannah Montana, you’ll be less likely to have worries about future fuel surcharges.

Right now SKI THE ROCKIES has over 20 great packages to the resorts your EPIC PASS is valid. Enjoy a great early season trip to Vail and stay at the newly renovated Manor Vail! Take advantage of great post holiday rates in Tahoe for the SUPER BOWL! Beat the President’s Holiday rush with an early February trip to Breckenridge or Keystone! Get some great prime time skiing and boarding in before the big SPRING BREAK RUSH! Or enjoy the best of both worlds – SUN & SNOW with an end of season trip to any one of these great resorts!

If you haven’t made EPIC PASS purchase, don’t delay. Sales have been strong and YOU don’t want to be left behind. Visit our website today and start planning for an EPIC season of your own. Prefer speaking with a knowledgeable WINTER TRAVEL SPECIALIST? Why not give us a call at 800-291-2588. We specialize in helping you get the best bang for your buck!

Thanks for THINKING SNOW!

Checked Baggage Policies - SIZE DOES MATTER!

Checked Baggage Policies – Size Does Matter!

Second in a 3 part series

It is hard to believe that it has been a month since the airlines announced the implementation of a fee for a second checked piece of luggage. On May 22, American Airlines announced that they would begin charging $15 for the first piece of checked effective June 15. It did not take long for other carriers (United and US Airways) to play MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO and match Americans fee policy. So as the cost for fuel continues to increase so have the airline fees.

For business travelers, in particular those having attained a preferred level with their carrier of choice, baggage does not seem to be an issue. Many have found that they are exempt from some or all of the additional surcharges, particularly if flying on a full coach fare or in Business or First Class.

This winter, families traveling on vacation will find that 2 outfits per day is going to cost them an additional $30-80 round trip per person, to check a second piece of luggage. For a family of four, this can put a big dent into the vacation budget.

As the ski season approaches, knowing how big of a bag you can check and how much it weighs will be almost as important to travelers as the destination and travel dates. Finding this information on airline website’s is about as elusive as a powder run in April. We have compiled this list of general guidelines for you to consider as you pack for your winter vacation. A list of airline phone numbers and web sites is also provided so you can call or click for the most current information because this winter SIZE DOES MATTER!

This information is provided as a quick reference guide. For the most current information and fees, please contact your carrier.

Additional Information as of 06/15/08:

All surcharges are directional and will apply both inbound and outbound.

Fees for checked baggage are collected at check-in.

Bag size is maximum of 62 linear inches (height+width+length)
Bags in excess of 62 linear inches will be considered oversize and subject to fees per Airline guidelines

Maximum weight for checked bag is 50lbs.
Bags over 50lbs are overweight and passenger will be assessed accordingly per Airline guidelines

Ski & Boot Bag will be considered 1 bag BUT must not exceed 50lb limit or over weight fee will apply

*Baggage surcharges as of 06/15/08.

This information is provided is accurate as of June 15, 2008. Please verify all information with your airline prior to your departure to assure you have the most current rates for checked baggage.

WINTER SKI VACATION PLANNING – THE TIME IS NOW!

Summer is usually the time when we are thinking about going to the beach or on a family road trip to a close by attraction. Who would have thought that many families would actually be skipping their summer vacations in order to finance their winter one?

Most travelers did not even consider planning their winter ski vacation until the "Top Resorts" issue of the ski magazines came out in late August. But the times are changing and this year there seems to be a change of heart. Many travelers who traditionally waited for FARE WARS and LAST MINUTE SPECIALS find themselves scrambling to book their flights and vacations NOW!

With gas prices climbing upwards, many families have to reevaluate their travel budgets. Although early season booking lodging discounts are plentiful, finding a CHEAP flight is proving to be a challenge. This week 3 major airlines announced that they were cutting back flights, reducing their fleets and lying off over 1,000 personnel per carrier. As a result, airports that use to have 4-6 flights per day on some routes are seeing reductions to 2-3. How will this impact the ski industry and what is a traveler to do?

The first thing is to determine your dates and start looking at flight availability TODAY! The longer you wait the more difficult is going to be to get the dates and flights you want, particularly if you MUST travel on Saturday or Sunday. Gone are the $300 fares from the East Coast to Denver and Salt Lake. Reports on all the major network news shows have shown that summer fares have increased by a minimum of $100 since last year. That $320 ticket from Atlanta to Denver last summer will cost you $450 this year. Add this increase to the revolving door of fuel surcharges and you will be looking at fares over $400 to destination airports like HAYDEN (STEAMBOAT) or BOZEMAN (BIG SKY).

Prices of airfare over the HOLY GRAIL Christmas vacation window of December 26 – January 2 are quickly climbing out of control. Of the 20 flights out of New York/LaGuardia to Steamboat/Hayden, only 3 were under $1000 with the lowest coming in at $720, well over last years average of $575-600.

With airfare of close to $800, the question arises – will a family of 4 shell out $3200 before the even get to their destination? We know everything has increased in price, but with the "BAGGAGE SURCHARGES" implemented in early May of this year, resort taxes ands fees closing in on 25% of the lodging total, many families may put their trips on the back burner.
Is it possible to travel over the holidays and get a deal? Unless you are willing and able to travel a week earlier (when many resorts are less crowded and offering lower prices on lodging) or visit a smaller destination (with less terrain, vertical feet and things to do when the slopes close), the answer is more than likely going to be NO. Even backing you vacation up 2 days and traveling 12/24-31 provides a minimal savings of $100 per ticket on flights that are not so kid friendly.

If you think these increases only apply to the Christmas Holiday, think again. Rates on prime 3-Day holiday weekends in January and February as well as the traditional SPRING BREAK month of March are showing less availability and higher prices than we have ever seen this early. Gone is the $999 SPRING BREAK packages, including air/lodging/lift ticket/transfer. If you are able to find one for under $1000 over President Holiday or $1500 over Spring Break, you had better move fast. Waiting will only drive the air portion of your trip higher.

Thinking about cashing in all those airline frequent traveler miles or points with your credit card company? Well, you had better move fast. Several carriers have already increasing the number of miles required to book a seat making it less likely that you will be able to cash in for multiple tickets on the same flight.

So as we ease into summer when we would normally dream of warm weather and cool ocean breezes, STOP! It’s time to THINK SNOW! The knowledgeable sales staff at SKI THE ROCKIES is available to help you find the best VALUE on a WINTER VACATION package to the destination YOU want to visit this year. Call us at 800-291-2588 or visit or website and check out some of the GREAT WINTER VACATION SPECIALS NOW!

Airlines New Checked Baggage Policies - The Tip of the Iceberg

(This is the first in a 3 part series that will address the challenges of traveling with the implementation of the new baggage limits.)

This Monday we will celebrate Memorial Day, the official kick-off of summer. Over the next several weeks schools will dismiss children for their summer recess and many families will begin to travel with their children on a vacation they have been planning, budgeting and saving for.

This summer, with prices increasing for everything from milk to motor oil, a traveling family of 4 will find themselves digging a little deeper if they are planning to check 2 bags per person on their trip. As of May 5, 2008, US based carriers are now charging $25 each direction for a second checked bag. Of course there are exceptions to that rule particularly if you are traveling in FIRST CLASS, on full fare coach ticket or have met the Silver, Gold or Platinum (terms will vary by carrier) requirements of your frequent flyer program.

For summer travelers , this should not be an issue. Many simply are going on a cruise or to the beach and will have little more than shorts, t-shirts and bathing suits to pack. However, come ski and snowboard season, it will be a whole new ball game.

Consider this, the average skier checks his or her skis, boots and one piece of luggage. The skis and boots, according to the airlines, will still be considered 1 piece of checked baggage. In an attempt to minimize damage to their skis and snowboards, many wrap their equipment with ski jackets, pants, sweaters and turtlenecks. The key here is to watch your BULK and weight! Exceed the 50 pound limit and you will certainly be hit with an over-weight surcharge averaging $100 each direction. Exceed the total linear inches mandated by the carrier and you could face an additional surcharge. And if you are checking a suitcase, you could find yourself paying $200 or more to take your skis with you.

So how is a savvy traveler going to get around this challenge? One might consider taking a smaller roll-on with their clothing as a carry-on, but that again can come back to haunt you. Several carriers have tightened the reins on what is a legal sized carry-on and are actively implementing it. Northwest airlines specifically states that you will be permitted one carry on item on certain flights (this is clearly stated on their website http://www.nwa.com/travel/luggage/carryon.html ). This doesn't mean a personal item like a purse or diaper bag and a roll-on, it means one or the other – period!

As carriers continue to down size their fleets, in an attempt to leave fewer open seats, they are also utilizing smaller planes. As a result, the smaller, more compact overhead storage areas cannot accommodate an over-stuffed carry-on. I mention this because I was recently a victim of my own efficiency. In order to save time on a recent weekend trip I packed everything into a regulation sized carry-on and had only a small purse with me. My husband had a personal item, his laptop, and a carry on as well. When the pre-boarding announcements were made, we were informed that we would have to check our bag prior to getting on the plane and then it would be returned to us when we arrived in our connection city. Although we were not assessed a checked baggage surcharge, we did have to wait 10 minutes until all of the "checked baggage" was brought up to the walkway. By advising people of this while they are still in the boarding area, an airline can decrease the amount of time it takes to board a plane (since there are fewer people trying to push oversized pieces of luggage into the overhead storage areas) and increase their on-time departure rating.

So how can you travel on a ski vacation
this winter without having to take out a small loan to get you baggage there? There are two easy answers – ship your clothing or rent skis! Although both options will cost you something, more than likely it will not cost you as much as you think! Let’s compare the options. Last year a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids under 12) traveling from Birmingham, AL to Steamboat Springs, CO for a long weekend of skiing mid-January paid $2750. Their package included air (on a special Kids Fly Free promotion), lodging in a 2 Bedroom ski-in/out condo, lift tickets for 3 days and roundtrip shuttle service. They each brought a set of skis and a piece of luggage. This year, using the same parameters the package could run them $3700 plus an additional $80-100 each way if they decided to check their skis and luggage. At $4340 - 4500 they are likely to opt putting the kids in day care and simply say "NO THANK YOU!!"

So how can you get the price back to something that a skiing family can manage? GET CREATIVE! Ski rental for 3 days for the family will run about $300 which will save them about $500. Opting to bring your equipment with you but consolidate by packing your clothes around your skis and boots (remember to watch your weight, going over 50 pounds will cost you) is yet another creative way to cut costs. By consolidating the amount of clothing you bring and utilizing the washer dryer in the unit (if applicable) or complex (just about every complex has at least one set per building) and carrying on 4 smaller suitcases, they could possibly bring the trip cost right back to $3700.

It is important to remember that each carrier has their own policy for carry-on baggage and personal items. Although the price of the checking that extra piece of luggage varies, it will still cost you something. The policy of what constitute ski equipment has not changed your skis and boot bag will still count as one piece of luggage. But remember what you have packed inside that bag may determine if that bag will cost you $25, $50, $80 or $100.

In future articles we will try to read through the fine print of the Baggage Policies of American, Continental, Delta/Northwest, United and USAir. We will also compare the cost of shipping your clothing and/or skis to the resort and how to make the best of something that is not likely to go away any time in the near future.

Whistler Resort - Ski Vacations for Winter and Spring

The Whistler resort experience is not only huge by any standards, but they get bountiful snowfall, have one of the longest ski and snowboard seasons anywhere and have won more awards to "best of" from virtually every ski and snowboard magazine in North America.

While many resorts are closed for the winter, Whistler and Blackcomb resorts are still open and according to their web site will be open through June 8 this year. I had the chance to originally ski here several decades ago when they were operated separately. Last spring I was able to make my way back after an absence of 15 years and was again simply blown away at how big, steep, diverse and enjoyable a week ski and snowboard vacation was at Whistler and Blackcomb. It was a year where the snow had come often and in plentiful amounts. This ensured top to bottom skiing and snowboarding of over 5,000 vertical feet. More than enough to have my legs shaking when ever going top to bottom.

A favorite spring event to always keep in mind to check out is the annual Telus music festival each April. When we were there last spring we saw Stephen Marley, Toots and the Maytalls on different days after skiing. Lots of activity in the village and parties galore.

Booking an all inclusive package is usually the best value when planning a ski and snowboard vacation to Whistler and Blackcomb Resorts. At Ski the Rockies we make sure to negotiate the best group deals to ensure you have the best value when booking a ski or snowboard vacation.

The there are abundant lodging options as well. Below is a quick sampling of some of our favorite places to stay on a ski vacation to Whistler.

The Woods Condominiums is a townhome-style accommodation property located on the award winning Chateau Whistler Resort Golf Course. A warm and confortable place to stay for your next ski and snowboard vacation in Whistler. The units at the Woods are complete with fully equipped kitchens including dishwashers and microwaves, fireplaces, heated tile floors, in-suite washers/dryers, balconies and TV/VCRs.

The Horstman House is a great home for your next ski and snowboard vacation at Whistler. Horstman House is a condominium close to Whistler's most popular spots, yet blissfully away from the pace of the village. Horstman House is located in the Benchlands at the foot of Blackcomb Mountain. These Whistler condos feature a fully equipped kitchen, gas fireplace, washer/dryer, TV, stereo and VCR in each suite. Some of these Whistler condos have balconies and views. All condos are non-smoking. Amenities at this Whistler lodging property include pool, hot tub, and daily housekeeping.

Convenience and comfortable condos for your next Whistler ski and and snowboard vacation. Conveniently located next to Whistler's Marketplace Centre, these tastefully decorated and contemporary Whistler condos are close to restaurants and all amenities, with the Village ski lifts within 300 metres walking distance. All of these Whistler condos are located on the 2nd or 3rd floor with Village shops underneath, and feature a comfy, gas fireplace, air conditioning and a private sundeck. Many have high ceilings. As a guest in this complex you can enjoy a common, outdoor hot tub for ultimate relaxation while on your Whistler ski vacation.

The Blackcomb Lodge is one of my all time favorites. Blackcomb Lodge could not be closer to the fun and excitement of Whistler Village. This property underwent a 5 million dollar renovation during the summer of 2004 and is better than ever! Restaurants, shops, cinemas, and art galleries surround the hotel. The Village Gondola is a brief 2 minute walk through the pedestrian village. Each Studio or Studio Loft unit provides full kitchen facilities and a variety of bed configurations for both families and couples. Relax in Whistler's only indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna. Araxi Restaurant offers superb dining and an award-winning wine selection to top off your Whistler ski vacation. I have personally enjoyed more than a few fine dinners here.

Looking to got to Whistler resort during peak season? Make sure you take advantage of early season booking discounts to lock in the best discounted package rates and guarantee getting the rooms you want. With airlines raising fares booking sooner to lock in rates will be a significant value in your ski vacation package for Whistler Resort.

Vail Ski Resorts Epic Season Pass – Best deal on season pass, getting the most from YOUR investment!

As the record setting snow of the 2007-08 ski and snowboard season slowly begin to melt, Vail Ski Resorts has a proverbial carrot to dangle in face of the avid skier, the Epic Season Pass. A new unlimited, unrestricted season pass for skiing and snowboarding, valid for the entire 2008-2009 ski and snowboard season, the Epic Season Pass will be valid at five of the top-rated resorts in the world: Vail, Beaver Creek , Breckenridge , Keystone and Heavenly Lake Tahoe . It is being offered to skiers and snowboarders at the initial price of only $579.

If you want UNLIMITED ACCESS for skiing and snowboarding at Vail and Beaver Creek , particularly over the dreaded holidays where daily lift tickets rates have soared to unprecedented rates over the past few years, this season pass could be the answer. And if you are worried where you will spend that Economic Stimulus Payment that is due next month, fret no more!

This past season, the walk-up, window rate for a day of skiing/snowboarding at these five resorts ranged from $50 in early season to close to $100 over the Christmas holiday for of an adult lift ticket with a five-day ticket at VAIL/BEAVER CREEK coming in at over $450.

So is it time for you to plan next season's ski vacation trip? THE answer is YES. In fact many are already planning where and when they will make those first tracks of the 2008-09 season and the Epic Season Pass is playing a big part. The savvy ski and snowboard traveler knows that early, mid and late season deals will make the investment in the Epic Season Pass cost effective. And for that hard core skier and snowboarder, who believes quantity is more important than quality, the possibility of 2, 3 or even 4 ski trips and ski vacations next season is justification for the purchase of an Epic Season Pass. Many are already checking their bank and frequent flyer accounts and planning trips to several of theses top destinations. For a mere $150 more than you would have paid for a 5-Day Vail Adult lift ticket last Christmas, you can have an Epic Season Pass and rack up more vertical feet on your altimeter than you ever thought possible in one ski and snowboard season.

Having the flexibility to ski and snowboard five major resorts is the key to making an Epic Season Pass work for you. It gives you the flexibility to determine where and when you want to ski or ride. If this weekends forecast calls for snow at the Tahoe ski and snowboard resort, you can be there with a great last minute deal, and ski or ride as much or as little as you want because you’ll have one less thing to buy. It’s time to take the thought out and putting more fun back into your winter vacation. The Epic Season Pass has all the key limitations and restrictions removed better tailoring it for YOU to have exceptional ski and snowboard experiences, all season long.

For years, Colorado skiers and snowboarders held a special place in their bank account each season for the renewal their treasured Colorado Pass. The HOLY GRAIL of season passes, the COLORADO PASS has offered enthusiasts unlimited skiing at 3 of Colorado’s major ski and snowboard resorts and 10 days, limited access at Vail and Beaver Creek for $439. When initially offered the pass was strictly a COLORADO RESIDENT ONLY perk as it had to be purchased at one of several designated local outlets. But soon savvy skiers and snowboarders found that they too could purchase this pass and would call the airlines to extend their late season trip dates just to purchase or renew their prize possession. Over the years, renewal has become a non-issue. But with the introduction of Epic Season Pass it will be interesting to see how many front range skiers and snowboarders are willing to test the waters. Will the lure of skiing in California be worth the trade off of their beloved A-Basin or will the Colorado Pass, like the Ski The Summit pass it replaced, be a distant memory and thing of the past? Visit us over the summer as we provide you with updates and feedback from pass holders and Summit County locals as they weigh in on what will certainly be a turning point in Colorado skiing!
